I understand your perspective but I think you might be missing a different angle.
I totally disagree with the Apple watch and anything that has a screen. When you look at a screen it takes your focus away from reality. Apple is working on some kind of Augmented Reality technology. AR could keep people in tune with reality and augment information like you said.
Virtual reality is a new technology medium that shouldn’t even be compared to a smartphone or watch. VR can immerse a user in a video game, an engineering designing world for building prototypes and modeling human organs for doctors to inspect, and even help people with pain. The capabilities of VR are new and shouldn’t be compared to a mobile tech device.
Additionally, what I’m most excited for is the ability to essentially teleport anywhere. Virtual reality will allow people from the United States to meet with people living in China. Eventually, when VR becomes indistinguishable from reality it will be the closest thing to teleportation and connecting those who can’t meet in real life.
